Our Project: During this 12-week “Tidepool Treasures” project of Winter 2015, First Graders from High Tech Elementary North County (HTeNC) studied the natural phenomena that is responsible for creating tidepools. By exploring the relationships and patterns between the Earth, Moon, Sun, and our Ocean, students reflected on the essential questions: How are tidepools natural treasures and how can we teach others to explore responsibly? |

Our Purpose:
First graders observed the moon over three months, researched the relationship between the moon and tide patterns, and learned about the tidepool habitat through authentic fieldwork, data collection, as well as internet and book research. To make their findings more accessible to others, students learned how to use digital media to write and create Tidepool Treasures: An Explorer's Guide for the general public to use. They are proud to share their knowledge with the rest of the world. To purchase their book please visit: https://www.createspace.com/5349663 |
Our Process:
Students researched and studied the Earth, Moon, Sun, and tides using first hand experiences, nonfiction text, technological resources, and observing the patterns found in moon and tide calendars. They visited Birch Aquarium to ask experts about sea life and to get a closer look at the needs and survival adaptations tidepool animals use in their daily experiences with tides. To further investigate, we traveled to Cardiff State Beach and Swami's Beach to collect and record data about the number of sea animals we found as well as the diversity of animals located at the beaches. After much collaboration, critique, and considering their audience, students created Tidepool Treasures: An Explorer's Guide to present during our Birch Aquarium Exhibition at Scripps. |
