Going out into the field is essential to understanding of tides and tidepools. Take a look at everything we discovered in the field!
Birch Aquarium - January 13, 2016
During this fieldwork, students explored sea animals in the aquarium and took a class about animal adaptations and tides. They engaged in conversation with Aquarium staff, asked questions, learned how to safely touch and hold sea animals and prepared themselves for their own tidepooling experience soon to come.
Carlsbad State Beach - January 21, 2016
To follow up our experiences at Birch Aquarium, students learned more about the tidepool habitat by hands on investigation at Carlsbad State Beach. In small groups, students used a data recording sheet to tally the number of sea animals within a given area. They also observed living and non-living features by taking a closer look at the ways in which sea animals survive inside tidepools.
Family Tidepooling Day - february 6, 2016
Families joined in on the tidepooling experience by exploring the tidepool habitat with the class. Each winter, the tides become extremely low in the afternoon, revealing an amazing underwater world that is usually covered with water! Families investigated the rocky area south of the Marine Room Restaurant in La Jolla.
Swami's Beach - february 19, 2016
Prior to this trip, first graders proposed which day and time in February to go tidepooling. The class used their understanding of tide patterns, time, and the phases of the moon to propose possible days to explore tidepools. To see video and pictures of their discussions visit here. During this fieldwork, students compared the sea animals that they found in Carlsbad. They took note of the number of sea animals that they found within a given area as well as the different types of sea animals that they observed while tidepooling.
